Jay-Z concert at Yankee Stadium delayed by security breach involving ticketless fans

A Jay-Z concert at Yankee Stadium in New York was delayed for over four hours on Sunday night after hundreds of fans without tickets attempted to enter the venue. According to a Live Nation representative, these individuals "stormed over peaceful ticket holders" and, in some instances, "breached security." This led to the closure of all stadium gates for an extended period to ensure safety. The concert, originally scheduled for 8:00 pm, saw ticket holders waiting outside despite having valid tickets. They were eventually admitted in small groups, and Jay-Z began his performance around 12:15 am. The American rapper briefly addressed the situation with the more than 40,000 attendees before starting the show. This event was the last of three concerts by the artist, who had not performed a major solo concert since 2017.

Sam Neill, star of 'Jurassic Park' and 'Peaky Blinders,' dies at 78

Legendary New Zealand actor Sam Neill, known for his roles in 'Jurassic Park' and 'Peaky Blinders,' passed away on Monday in Sydney, Australia, at the age of 78, his family announced. A statement posted on the actor's Instagram page, using the Māori word "whānau" for extended family, indicated that the loss was sudden and unexpected, but noted that Neill remained cancer-free. Neill had previously battled a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer, revealing in April that he was cancer-free. The family expressed gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital. Neill's career spanned five decades, including the Oscar-winning film 'The Piano,' but he is most recognized for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 'Jurassic Park.' Born in Northern Ireland, Neill immigrated to New Zealand at age 7 and was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1991 and a knighthood from New Zealand in 2022. Outside of Hollywood, Neill lived on his New Zealand farm, where he named animals after Hollywood icons. He was also an environmental activist and established his organic winery, Two Paddocks, in 1993. In 2023, Neill revealed his diagnosis with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy, during which he wrote his memoir 'Did I Ever Tell You This?' in 2022. In a 2024 interview, he stated he was not afraid of dying but would find it "very irritating" due to unfulfilled aspirations. He is survived by his four children and several grandchildren.

Anele Tembe inquest reopens five years after fatal fall from Cape Town hotel

A formal inquest into the death of 22-year-old Anele Tembe is set to begin on Monday, 13 July 2026, in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court. Tembe died five years ago after falling from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town on 11 April 2021. At the time, she was engaged to rapper Kiernan "AKA" Forbes. The inquest aims to examine the circumstances of her death and determine if anyone is responsible. The National Prosecuting Authority NPA previously concluded that Tembe took her own life, a finding consistently disputed by her family. Following AKA's assassination in 2024, the NPA referred the matter to an inquest. Six witnesses are expected to testify. New text messages have emerged, including an exchange between AKA and a Tembe family lawyer regarding an earlier incident where Anele allegedly threatened to jump, and another chat between Anele and Forbes where she reportedly spoke of attempting to take her own life. The Tembe family hopes these messages will prompt the NPA to investigate alleged discrepancies. Tony Forbes, AKA's father, publicly stated his son was not a murderer. Former police minister Bheki Cele had previously criticized the NPA for not enrolling the case, suggesting investigators had not ruled out murder. The ambiguity surrounding Tembe's death has led to speculation that Forbes's murder in 2024 might be linked to unresolved questions about her fall. The Tembe family views the inquest as an opportunity to find answers, believing new evidence could

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu defends akara comment, urges entertainers to fund charitable foundations

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu defended her previous comments on empowering women through petty trading during the launch of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Lokoja, Kogi State. In June, she had suggested government grants for women to start businesses like frying akara and roasting corn, which drew criticism from some Nigerians, including the Yoruba Union, Ìgbìnmọ́ Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá. Mrs. Tinubu stood by the Renewed Hope Initiative’s grassroots empowerment scheme and appealed to the Nigerian entertainment industry, specifically mentioning artists like Burna Boy, Asake, and Davido, to establish charitable foundations to assist the poor. She emphasized that while luxury cars are good, entertainers should also contribute to society. The First Lady listed various petty traders, including sellers of pepper, vegetables, okra, melon, akara, and kuli-kuli, as beneficiaries of her empowerment scheme. She also recounted a story about an Abuja graduate who became successful selling akara after receiving support. Her June comments had led to President Bola Tinubu playfully calling her “Iya Alakara” and she had previously extended N50,000 grants to 2,000 petty traders in Jigawa State.

Burkinabe filmmaker Corenthien Nana discusses challenges and potential of national cinema

Burkinabe filmmaker Corenthien Nana, whose passion for cinema began in childhood, transitioned from science studies to filmmaking after succeeding in a state competition. He trained as a cinema and audiovisual assistant, choosing directing because it aligned with his personality as a "technician" and "man of the field." Nana has directed five feature films, starting with "Le Sort de Nestor" in 2019, followed by "L'Hymne d'amour" 2021, "La Colère du roi" 2022, "Honorable" 2024, and "La Conseillère" 2025, which was selected for competition at Fespaco. His latest film, "Besoin d'un père," currently showing at Ciné Burkina, addresses social pressure on women to have male children. Nana draws inspiration for his scripts from observing society, current events, culture, arts, governance, education, and ethics, aiming to raise awareness about societal issues. He believes Burkinabe cinema has significant potential due to new state initiatives, such as the creation of a structure to support film institutions, and the development of projection rooms and digital platforms. However, he identifies major obstacles: financing, which is scarce; training, as access to institutions like ISISS is limited; and the high cost of quality cinematic equipment, which often requires importation. Nana is currently writing new projects and aims to create a popular cinema festival to encourage public attendance, noting that while major events like Fespaco fill cinemas, attendance drops afterward. His solicitor, Humzah Ilyas, stated that Ward was grateful to the jury for carefully considering the evidence and confirmed that the jury agreed it was a consensual sexual encounter. Lagos-based contemporary artist King Ereso states that talent alone is insufficient for global success, attributing his international recognition to faith, discipline, and a long-term career approach. His works are currently exhibited at the Four Seasons Hotel in Singapore and he is exclusively represented in Asia by Yang Gallery. Ereso emphasizes consistent effort and self-improvement, drawing inspiration from his Edo heritage and the history of the Benin Kingdom, incorporating Ankara-inspired fashion and his signature teal palette. He believes staying authentic to his Nigerian roots makes his art universally resonant. Ereso dismisses the idea that recurring elements like teal and Ankara are mere symbols, viewing them as personal expressions of identity. He credits Kontroversial Studios for helping him develop a structured, long-term strategy, enabling him to focus on art creation and build relationships with galleries. Ereso also engages in graphic design, sculpture, fashion, and character development, including his character Dave, conceived as a global storytelling universe. He encourages young Nigerian artists to pursue international success without limiting beliefs.
