Transmission Company of Nigeria upgrades four Lagos substations to enhance power supply
The Transmission Company of Nigeria TCN has upgraded four transmission substations in Lagos: Apapa Road, Ijora, Lekki, and Alausa, to improve electricity supply. The Apapa Road substation, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, received two new 60MVA power transformers, tripling its capacity from 60MVA to 180MVA. The Ijora Transmission Substation saw two 30MVA transformers replaced with two 100MVA transformers, increasing its capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA. The Lekki Transmission Substation received two new 60MVA transformers, doubling its 132kV capacity. The Alausa Transmission Substation had a 30MVA transformer replaced with a 100MVA unit, raising its capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA. These upgrades, some funded by the World Bank and executed by Shanghai Electric Limited, aim to provide more reliable and efficient electricity to various areas, including Apapa Causeway, Ijora, Amukoko, Ajegunle, Apapa Wharf, Tin Can Island, Lekki, and Alausa, serving hundreds of thousands of residents. The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, stated that the Federal Government is addressing longstanding constraints in the transmission network that limited electricity evacuation. TCN's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sule Abdulaziz, emphasized that these projects are part of a nationwide program to expand transmission infrastructure and ensure efficient evacuation of generated power, urging Nigerians to protect critical power infrastructure.
