Three terror convicts who escaped Kamiti Maximum Prison receive additional 15-year sentences

Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage delivered the sentences at Kahawa Law Courts on August 28, 2026, after their conviction on June 18, 2026, for committing a terrorist act. The trio broke out of custody between November 14 and 15, 2021, traveling through Kitui and Endao before being tracked down by detectives. Odhiambo was already serving a 15-year sentence for offenses related to traveling to a terrorist-designated country and exiting Kenya through an unauthorized border point; his new sentence begins after his current one.

Abikar was serving a 41-year sentence for his involvement in the 2015 Garissa University attack, and his additional 15 years will commence after completing the 41-year term. Abdala, who was previously acquitted on appeal after an initial 22-year sentence, will begin his new 15-year term from the date of that acquittal. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations stated its commitment to pursuing terror suspects and dismantling terrorist networks.
