Kenya's new police uniforms spark KSh 3 billion tender transparency concerns

President William Ruto launched a redesigned uniform for Kenya Police officers, replacing the existing light blue shirt/blouse and dark blue trousers. Approximately 60,000 regular police officers are expected to receive the new attire. A standard uniform set is estimated at KSh 25,000, covering a shirt/blouse, trousers, jacket, T-shirt, cap, sweater, socks, belt, and raincoat.

A separate ceremonial uniform costs about KSh 30,000, excluding footwear priced between KSh 3,000 and KSh 5,000. The Police Department has not disclosed the companies awarded the tender or the total value of the agreement, leading to scrutiny regarding procurement transparency. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja did not respond to queries on the procurement outcome.

The overall cost for 60,000 officers at KSh 25,000 per set aligns with the KSh 3 billion figure cited in procurement circles. Separately, the government unveiled specially designed maternity uniforms for pregnant officers in the National Police Service. The Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Services stated this addresses the professional realities of women in public service.
