Three terror convicts who escaped Kamiti Maximum Prison receive additional 15-year sentences
Three terror convicts, Musharaf Abdala, Mohamed Ali Abikar, and Joseph Juma Odhiambo, who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison in 2021, have each been sentenced to an additional 15 years in prison. Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage delivered the sentences at Kahawa Law Courts on August 28, 2026, after their conviction on June 18, 2026, for committing a terrorist act. The trio broke out of custody between November 14 and 15, 2021, traveling through Kitui and Endao before being tracked down by detectives. Odhiambo was already serving a 15-year sentence for offenses related to traveling to a terrorist-designated country and exiting Kenya through an unauthorized border point; his new sentence begins after his current one. Abikar was serving a 41-year sentence for his involvement in the 2015 Garissa University attack, and his additional 15 years will commence after completing the 41-year term. Abdala, who was previously acquitted on appeal after an initial 22-year sentence, will begin his new 15-year term from the date of that acquittal. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations stated its commitment to pursuing terror suspects and dismantling terrorist networks.
