Nairobi traders protest tax increase, clash with police in CBD
Small-scale traders in Nairobi protested on Friday against a KSh 700,000 increase in the customs minimum benchmark for general containerised consolidated cargo, which they say will raise business costs. The demonstrations disrupted traffic and business in the Central Business District as traders marched towards the Kenya Revenue Authority offices. Police used tear gas to disperse protesters along Parliament Road and Kenyatta Avenue, leading to temporary movement restrictions and closure of some businesses. The KRA defended the adjustment, effective August 20, stating it aims to prevent revenue losses and address undervaluation. Traders argue the higher benchmark will increase their financial burden and could force them to raise consumer prices, calling for a reversal or review of the measure.
