Ghana's maternal mortality ratio declined by 75.2% between 2000 and 2023

This information was shared during a stakeholder engagement focused on strengthening maternal healthcare services and reducing preventable maternal deaths under the M-MARP initiative. According to the latest estimates from the World Health Organization and partner agencies, Ghana's maternal mortality ratio dropped from 943 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2000 to 234 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023. While this represents significant progress, the current ratio is still above the Sustainable Development Goal and WHO benchmark of fewer than 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030.

The Ministry of Health's renewed focus aims to improve systems and services for early complication management and ensure access to quality care, with the M-MARP initiative contributing to identifying and addressing gaps in maternal healthcare delivery.
