Ghana launches new plan to reduce maternal mortality
The Ministry of Health has introduced the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Plan MMARP to address maternal deaths, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama. Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, stated on August 17, 2026, that the government considers reducing maternal deaths a moral imperative and a national responsibility. President Mahama's commitment is driving these renewed efforts to prioritize maternal health. The initiative aims to strengthen emergency obstetric care, enhance referral systems, and improve accountability in health facilities to ensure women survive pregnancy and childbirth. Ghana's maternal mortality ratio decreased by 75.2% between 2000 and 2023.
