President Mahama arrives in Angola for AU summit on African conflict prevention
President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, for the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union AU. The summit, scheduled for August 30, 2026, is focused on strengthening conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms across Africa. Led by HE João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of Angola and the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation, the meeting aims to adopt a comprehensive Decision, Action Plan, and Implementation Matrix on Conflict Prevention and Resolution. African leaders will assess existing peace and security frameworks to improve coordination, responsiveness, implementation, and financing of the African Peace and Security Architecture APSA and the African Governance Architecture AGA. This gathering occurs amid complex security challenges in regions such as Sudan, Eastern DRC, the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, and Mozambique. President Mahama and other heads of state are expected to develop strategies to enhance regional stability and collective peacebuilding capacity.
