President Faye outlines ECOWAS priorities to new Commission President General Birame Diop
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye met with General Birame Diop, the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, on August 27 at the Palace of the Republic. General Diop, appointed for the 2026-2030 term, assumes his role amid significant security, economic, and institutional challenges in West Africa. Key priorities discussed include revitalizing the ECOWAS single currency project, the Eco, and improving the collection of community levies to ensure institutional funding. The leaders also emphasized the importance of free movement of people and goods as a driver for regional economic integration. A major focus for General Diop, given his background as former Minister of the Armed Forces and former Chief of General Staff of the Armies, is regional security. The operationalization of the regional counter-terrorism brigade was highlighted as a priority to combat the growing jihadist threat. This meeting precedes General Diop's official assumption of duties, placing Senegal in a central role within ECOWAS, with President Faye holding the rotating presidency and General Diop leading the executive body.
