Protests and roadblocks spread across western Libya amid power cuts and rising temperatures

These protests, primarily involving youth, are a response to increasing summer temperatures and frequent, lengthy power cuts. Protesters have set up burning barricades, causing severe traffic congestion and temporarily closing major roads in Tripoli. Government buildings, including the Foreign Ministry, state TV channel, and Telecoms Holding Company, have been blockaded with soil or rubble.

The Alwataniya state TV channel was criticized for not covering the demonstrations. There are also reports of protests at the Mellitah Gas processing plant, with demonstrators aiming to halt gas exports to Italy to address domestic shortages. Initially sparked by power outages, the demands of the demonstrators have evolved to include calls for the removal of the head of the General Electricity Company of Libya GECOL, better living conditions, improved governance, accountability against corruption, and the ousting of the Aldabaiba government.

Security has been increased around the Prime Minister's Office to prevent any politically motivated coup attempts. GECOL has announced that new generation units and the Tripoli South Power Station will be operational "soon." Following the protests, the General Works Company has been clearing roadblocks and debris from main roads.
