Oncologist warns Nigerians about dangers of silence on cancer symptoms
Dr. Temitope Olatunji, an Oncologist and Radiation and Clinical Consultant at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, has urged Nigerians to report any unusual bodily symptoms to reduce cancer-related deaths. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota, Ogun, Dr. Olatunji emphasized the importance of annual health screenings for early detection and intervention. She identified poverty as a significant barrier to regular health checks and treatments, calling on all levels of government to increase public awareness and education campaigns on cancer, early detection, and treatment options. Dr. Olatunji stressed that early detection and treatment are crucial for saving lives and controlling cancer cases in Nigeria. She also commended the Federal Government's health insurance program for helping to reduce out-of-pocket expenses, advocating for further efforts to deepen public awareness of its existence. This warning follows the death of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, known as Ogogo, who passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after battling stage-four cancer.
