Ghana self-funded evacuation of 1,600 nationals from South Africa
Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the evacuation of over 1,600 Ghanaian nationals from South Africa since May 2026 was entirely funded by the Government of Ghana and its local partners. This statement, dated August 13, 2026, clarifies that Ghana did not request or receive any financial or material assistance from the South African government for these repatriations. The Ministry emphasized that Ghana will not be among the countries asked by South Africa to reimburse evacuation costs. Evacuees receive reintegration funds, transport fares, and other relief items upon arrival. The Ministry reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting Ghanaians abroad.
