NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah comments on Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa after deputies' departures
Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress NDC, stated that Electoral Commission EC Chairperson Jean Mensa should feel isolated following the resignation of Deputy Chairperson for Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare, and the retirement of Deputy Chairperson for Operations, Samuel Tettey. Speaking on August 1, 2026, Nketiah noted that while the court has directed the EC to continue its duties, the NDC is observing the situation. He suggested that if Mensa remains in office, she should prepare for loneliness, remarking that with two of the "Three Musketeers" gone, she is left alone. Nketiah also referenced past legal actions, stating that despite a court ruling allowing the EC to operate, the NDC is simply watching. This development follows President John Dramani Mahama's dismissal of multiple petitions in February 2026, which sought the removal of the EC Chairperson, her deputies, and the Special Prosecutor. The Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, had determined that no prima facie case was established in the ten petitions submitted to the President. The removal process for the EC Chairperson and deputies, who have similar conditions of service to superior court justices, is governed by Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, requiring a Chief Justice assessment for a prima facie case before further investigation.
