Ahanta West MP unveils historic statue of King Badu Bonsu II 180 years after his execution

This event took place exactly 180 years after the monarch was executed by Dutch colonial authorities. The ceremony, held at Agona Nkwanta in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region, was a major highlight of the maiden Ahanta Heritage Month celebrations. It attracted traditional rulers, Members of Parliament, ministers of state, members of the diplomatic corps, and residents.

The event remembered King Badu Bonsu II's courage and resistance against Dutch colonial domination. Traditional leaders led a candlelight procession before jointly unveiling the monument. King Badu Bonsu II was executed by the Dutch for resisting colonial rule and treaties, and his head was later transported to the Netherlands, remaining at Leiden University Medical Centre for over a century.

The Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, spearheaded the monument as part of efforts to preserve the Ahanta Kingdom's history and cultural identity. Madam Bissue described the occasion as a "moment of reckoning" for the Ahanta people to reflect on their shared history and future, urging unity to preserve their heritage and pursue sustainable development.
