Eastern Region records 30 galamsey-related deaths in 2026, NADMO calls for stricter pit closure enforcement
The National Disaster Management Organisation NADMO has reported approximately 30 mining-related deaths in Ghana's Eastern Region from January 2026 to date. Emmanuel Konja Tullah, Deputy Regional NADMO Director for Technical and Disaster Risk Reduction, disclosed this following a recent incident on August 29, 2026, at Asaman Tamfoe. He emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of regulations requiring mining pits to be properly covered after use to prevent further fatalities from unregulated or abandoned sites. The latest incident involved a collapsed mining pit that trapped 11 illegal miners, with seven bodies recovered and four still missing. Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, Ghana National Ambulance Service, NADMO, and volunteers were involved in the search and recovery operations.
