Aguiyi-Ironsi family thanks Tinubu, Obasanjo, and others for honoring late Head of State
The family of the late Maj. Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Nigeria's first military Head of State, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and other dignitaries. Their appreciation follows the commemorations marking the 60th anniversary of Aguiyi-Ironsi's assassination. In a statement signed by his son and former Minister of Defence, Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, the family described the event as a tribute to the late leader's legacy of patriotism, discipline, integrity, and national unity. Aguiyi-Ironsi was assassinated on July 29, 2026, during a military counter-coup in Ibadan, alongside Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi. The family particularly thanked President Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Defence Christopher Musa, for advocating national unity and patriotism, values exemplified by Aguiyi-Ironsi. They also commended former President Obasanjo for attending the memorial in Umuahia and acknowledged former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon for his goodwill message. Governor Otti was also praised for hosting the event and ensuring its success.
