Chief Munjuku II Nguvauva Military Base unveiled in Gobabis, honoring former Ovambanderu chief
Hundreds gathered in Gobabis, Omaheke region, for the official unveiling of the Chief Munjuku II Nguvauva Military Base. The government renamed the 126 Battalion after former Ovambanderu chief Munjuku II, recognizing his significant role during the colonial period. Current Ovambanderu chief Tjozohongo II Nguvauva expressed gratitude for the honor, highlighting his father's contributions, including welcoming founding president Sam Nujoma in Botswana during his exile. Ovambanderu community historian Asaria Tjozongoro-Kandjou noted the hardships faced by the community under colonial rule and emphasized Chief Munjuku II's strong ties with Chief Hosea Kutako, sending money to support Namibia's independence. Chief Munjuku II also attended the 1984 Lusaka Conference in Zambia as an observer, a move that created tensions with the South African administration. Born in Botswana, Nguvauva led the Ovambanderu people there from 1951 and continued as chief in Namibia until his death in 2008. Senior Ovambanderu Traditional Authority councillor Arnold Tjozongoro thanked the government, stating this was a significant step for the community, which never wavered in the fight against colonialism.
