US visa processing changes for Namibians, applicants now travel to South Africa
Effective August 1, Namibians seeking a US visa must travel to Johannesburg or Cape Town, South Africa, for interviews and processing, as the US Embassy in Windhoek will no longer provide these services. This change, part of a broader US State Department restructuring under Secretary of State Marco Rubio, aims to reduce the number of African embassies and consulates authorized to process visas from nearly 50 to 20 hubs. The embassy states this is not a downgrade of diplomatic ties, but for Namibian travelers, it means additional costs and time. While Namibia could consider reciprocal measures, such actions might negatively impact its vital tourism sector, which relies significantly on high-spending American visitors. Instead, more productive avenues include diplomatic representation through SADC, regional coordination with other affected states to negotiate concessions, and actively marketing Namibia as an accessible destination for American travelers despite the new US visa requirements.
