Education Minister engages university administrators over ongoing strike
Ghana's Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, met with the Ghana Association of University Administrators GAUA and university management representatives to address the ongoing industrial action by administrative and professional staff. Key issues discussed included salary adjustments, market premium, job evaluation, staff equivalences, conditions of service, outstanding allowances, retirement arrangements, and staff placement. The Minister appealed to the union to suspend the strike and return to negotiations, assuring them he would engage the Ministry of Finance and Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. He also committed to resolving the outstanding one-time research allowance, referencing a letter from the Deputy Minister for Finance requesting beneficiary data. While the union leaders, Stanley Abofam and Rev Kweku Kakereyamwa, described the engagement as positive, they confirmed the strike remains in force, stating they would consult their constituents and respond within 48 hours. University management representatives urged striking staff to return to work, citing disruptions to admissions and other essential activities. The meeting concluded with a commitment to continued dialogue to resolve the issues and restore industrial harmony.
