
GECOL appoints Bashir Al-Marash as new Chairman amid electricity crisis
The General Assembly of Libya's General Electricity Company GECOL has appointed Bashir Al-Marash as its new Chairman, replacing Mohamed Al-Mashai. This change follows a summer of electricity cuts and blackouts. A new Board of Directors was also appointed. Al-Marash, who holds Higher Diplomas in Electrical Engineering, Administrative Sciences, and Computer Science, brings diverse professional experience in electrical and administrative fields. His career includes leadership roles such as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Electrical Construction Company and the Libyan Foundation for Science, Technology and Training. The Tripoli government stated that the new board's duties include enhancing GECOL's management efficiency, stabilizing the electrical grid, improving generation, transmission, and distribution systems, and accelerating maintenance and project implementation to provide a more stable electricity service for citizens.
