Bukhungu Stadium upgrade set to boost sports, talent, and local economy
The ongoing renovation of Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega is generating optimism among coaches, athletes, and local stakeholders, who believe the upgraded facility will strengthen talent development and stimulate economic activity across Western Kenya. Football coach Gilbert Coach highlighted the region's long-standing struggle with a scarcity of proper sporting infrastructure, noting that the deterioration of existing facilities, such as in Mumias, negatively impacted the sport's growth. He added that the absence of enclosed grounds forced players onto open fields, compromising fan safety and making it harder for talent scouts to identify promising individuals. Athletics coach Frank Omondi described the significant transformation at Bukhungu since 2015, when it had trees and potholes, stating it now supports athletics, football, and other sports, allowing athletes to train from morning to evening. Omondi acknowledged President William Ruto and the national government for the investment, emphasizing that the stadium belongs to the communities it serves.
