Tunisia expresses gratitude to Algeria for electricity supply during heatwave
Tunisia has officially thanked Algeria and the public group Sonelgaz for their crucial support in securing its electricity supply during a period of extreme heat. The unprecedented pressure on Tunisia's national electricity grid necessitated a rotating load shedding program across various regions to maintain stability and prevent widespread outages. The contribution of Algerian electricity supplies was vital in mitigating these disruptions and ensuring service continuity. Fayçal Trifa, President-Director General of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company STEG, conveyed his profound gratitude to Sonelgaz for its continuous support, highlighting the solidarity and strategic relations between the two nations. The electrical interconnection between Algeria and Tunisia, with an annual exchange capacity of up to 600 megawatts, played a key role. Supplies were adjusted to meet Tunisian needs, with only a brief interruption due to recent fires in Algeria, after which exports were quickly restored. Beyond electricity, Algeria is also Tunisia's primary natural gas supplier, providing approximately 65% of the gas used in Tunisia's electricity production mix for 2026.
