Initial reports suggested self-defense, but subsequent revelations from Libération and Mediapart contradict this account. The judicial investigation confirms that Cheikh F. was shot in the back while his vehicle was immobilized. The pursuit began around 2:30 AM when municipal police officers in Le Pontet noticed Cheikh F.'s car driving at high speed.

After a 12-kilometer chase, his vehicle was trapped at the Vedène toll booth between several police cars. The police officer, Théo U., a 28-year-old former gendarme, opened fire during the approach to the immobilized vehicle. However, Théo U.'s testimony has inconsistencies, and he admitted uncertainty about his exact position and distance from Cheikh F. at the time of the shooting.

The absence of crucial video recordings from the toll booth, urban equipment, and officers' body cameras in the initial hours of the investigation raises further questions. Cheikh F.'s family, through their lawyer Arié Alimi, disputes the police version, stating that Cheikh F., a former detainee for traffic offenses, fled out of "fear" of law enforcement.
