Bernard Antwi Boasiako seeks NPP national chairmanship from prison
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, a former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party NPP, has had nomination forms picked up by his campaign team to contest the party鈥檚 National Chairmanship position. This action comes despite Boasiako currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. His campaign's Communications Director, Ewuradwoa Coleman, stated that they believe Boasiako should have the opportunity to participate in the party's processes, and that any legal or constitutional impediments to his candidacy should be determined by the appropriate party authority. Boasiako was convicted by an Accra High Court for offenses related to illegal mining activities, including assigning mineral rights without ministerial approval and facilitating unlicensed mining operations. He was also fined GH垄120,000. Boasiako has challenged his conviction and sentence, and his lawyers have filed an application for bail pending appeal.
