President Mahama advocates for Africa to end dependency on the West
President John Mahama has called for Africa to break its dependency on the Western world and take greater control of its resources and development. Speaking in an interview with TRT World, President Mahama stated that Africa's current global position, shaped by the post-World War II international order, has led to a dependency syndrome. He highlighted that Africa relies heavily on Western assistance and has limited control over the pricing and processing of its natural resources, which are bought and sold at prices set by the West. This imbalance informed a conference on health sovereignty, aiming to encourage African countries to become more self-reliant in healthcare by building resilient health systems and increasing local pharmaceutical production. President Mahama emphasized that while Africa does not reject international partnerships, these must be structured to give African countries greater control over their development priorities. He believes that Africa's prosperity would benefit the global economy and that the continent has the capacity to strengthen its influence and voice in international affairs.
