Faith Odhiambo calls for investigation after Speaker Wetang'ula admits TSC letters issued at State House

Odhiambo stated that Wetang'ula confessed on camera that he accompanies MPs to State House, where the president gives each legislator ten TSC appointment letters, which are then sold for up to KSh 400,000 each. She warned that this arrangement violates Article 237 of the Constitution, which grants the TSC exclusive authority to recruit and appoint teachers independently, thus reducing teacher recruitment to a patronage scheme. Odhiambo highlighted that this practice bypasses qualified, unemployed graduates who have followed proper channels, in favor of those who can purchase appointments through political connections.

She noted that despite a national teacher deficit of 96,000 to 116,000 posts, over 300,000 trained teachers remain unemployed. Odhiambo emphasized that Wetang'ula's admission, if unaddressed, undermines the constitutional order and the rule of law, urging accountability and clarification from the TSC and oversight bodies.
