Canada outlines foreign worker categories exempt from work permits
The Canadian government has issued new guidance from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada IRCC detailing categories of foreign nationals who may be eligible to work in Canada without requiring a work permit. This guidance, cited by PUNCH Online, clarifies that exemptions are based on the nature of work, activities, or specific circumstances. While these exemptions exist, they do not guarantee entry into Canada, as travellers must still meet specific conditions for their category. The exemptions cover 25 distinct categories, including academics, business visitors, emergency workers, military personnel, athletes, students, and religious leaders. Other included groups are examiners, public speakers, short-term researchers, highly skilled workers, aviation accident investigators, civil aviation inspectors, crew members, emergency service providers, foreign government representatives, UN representatives, expert witnesses, and family members of diplomats. The sports, media, and arts sectors also see exemptions for athletes, coaches, judges, referees, news reporters, media crews, advertising and commercial crews, and certain short-term performing artists.
