Netflix's 'Umthetho' explores family loyalty and difficult choices
Netflix's South African crime drama 'Umthetho' focuses on themes of family, loyalty, love, and survival, compelling its characters to make choices that blur the lines between right and wrong. Nqobile 'Nunu' Khumalo portrays Mbali, whose life is upended by the return of her brother Moses, played by Tony Kgoroge, whom she believed to be dead. His reappearance draws her into a dangerous world of prison and complex family decisions. Khumalo describes Mbali as brave and firm in her choices, driven by an unconditional love for her family, particularly her brothers Moses and Sphelele. Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo co-stars as Crystal Dlamini, Moses' wife, a prison nurse and mother who navigates a male-dominated environment. Crystal's attraction to Moses stems from his commitment to a cause and the injustice he faces. Kgoroge characterizes Moses as a survivor, whose life as a prisoner constantly conflicts with his roles as a husband, father, and brother. Mbali's efforts to protect her family come at a personal cost, as she struggles with self-love while trying to keep her family together. Cooper-Khumalo emphasizes that each character in 'Umthetho' serves a distinct purpose, contributing to the series' complexity.
