EU observers note delays and accessibility issues in Zambian elections
The European Union Election Observation Mission EU EOM reported that Zambia's general elections were largely well-organized and transparent during polling. However, the mission identified several operational challenges, including delays in opening at some polling stations, overcrowding, and tensions in certain locations. While voting procedures were generally effective and materials available, the counting process was slower and less organized than voting, with some stations experiencing difficulties in completing paperwork. The EU EOM also highlighted significant accessibility concerns, noting that only 41% of observed polling stations were accessible to people with reduced mobility, and 33% lacked special provisions for voters with disabilities. Furthermore, the mission raised concerns about the underrepresentation of women, who constituted only 9% of candidates across all levels, including just one female presidential candidate out of 13, reflecting persistent barriers to their political participation.
