Ghanaian women increasingly integral to political landscape, says Joyce Bawah Mogtari
Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Senior Presidential Advisor and Senior Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, stated that women are becoming an integral part of Ghana's political architecture, holding influential roles beyond traditional positions. Reflecting on her political journey in a Facebook post on August 26, 2026, Bawah Mogtari noted her appointment by then-President John Dramani Mahama to succeed Hannah Tetteh, and how the NDC's subsequent election defeat provided an opportunity for growth, leading her to become a regular voice for the former President and the party. She highlighted President Mahama's deliberate efforts to create space for women in political leadership, citing his selection of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for two consecutive electoral cycles. Bawah Mogtari observed that since the NDC's return to power in 2024, women have occupied positions as ministers, deputy ministers, chief executives, deputy chief executives, and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives. She emphasized that women are now seen as trusted advisers, strategists, aides, and decision-makers at the highest levels of political leadership. While acknowledging ongoing challenges related to parity, visibility, and recognition for women, she believes the increasing number of women in political leadership signifies progress, making women's representation normal rather than just a topic of discussion.
