Egyptian engineer Mohamed Al-Moatasem Bahaa wins silver medal for AI-powered biomanufacturing project

Egyptian engineer Mohamed Al-Moatasem Bahaa was awarded a silver medal at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions for his project that integrates biomanufacturing with artificial intelligence. The project cultivates algae and plants in AI-operated greenhouses, eliminating the need for fresh water or traditional farmland. It utilizes water-based systems with groundwater, tolerating high salinity, making it suitable for protein production in desert environments. Raw protein extracted from these plants is used to create plant-based meat and cheese, products in high demand in European markets for healthier and sustainable alternatives. Spirulina algae, for instance, contains up to 65% protein, along with Omega-3 and vitamins A and K, while water lentils have about 40% protein and double in size daily. The company has begun exporting products and secured over $2.1 million in sales agreements with European clients. A team of 15 to 20 young professionals from fields like AI, biotechnology, and renewable energy, many from Zewail City and the American University in Cairo, lead the project with support from the Academy of Scientific Research and the "Shark Tank Egypt" program. The initiative is recognized as a strong example of collaboration between scientific research and industry, showcasing Egyptian youth's capacity for global competition with sustainable innovations addressing food security.
