Conflicting reports emerge after 10 soldiers killed in jihadist attack in San, Mali

The attack was claimed by the JNIM Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims jihadists, according to security and local sources. A security source stated the camp was "temporarily occupied" by assailants, with a provisional toll of "around 10 soldiers killed." A local source also confirmed losses among the armed forces but did not specify the exact number.

Residents of San described violent clashes starting at 5:00 AM, with continuous heavy detonations and gunfire. The Malian army, in a statement, described it as a "attempted attack on the FAMa base in San this Sunday, August 9, 2026, at 05:30," asserting that a "vigorous response from the FAMa" repelled the attempt and the "situation is under control." No casualties among the jihadists have been reported by either Malian authorities or the JNIM.
