Lagos to host 15,000 athletes for maiden National Intermediate Games
Lagos is preparing to host the inaugural National Intermediate Games from October 1 to 15, 2026, expecting approximately 15,000 young athletes aged 15 to 18. These athletes will compete in 23 compulsory and five optional sports across 10 venues in the state. Sam Egube, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, stated during a media parley that the games aim to foster youth development, talent discovery, and national unity. He emphasized the competition's role in identifying and nurturing young athletes for progression to the National Sports Festival, continental, and global stages, and in developing grassroots sports. Lagos plans to leverage its experience in hosting major international sporting events to ensure a world-class competition. Egube also noted the games' potential to boost the local economy by supporting small businesses and allowing visitors to experience the state's culture. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, confirmed rapid progress in preparations, with only 37 days remaining until the games at the time of the media parley. Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, highlighted the initiative's goal to bridge the gap between young talents and professional athletes, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu having inspected facilities.
