Akhannouch represents King Mohammed VI at AU extraordinary summit in Luanda

The summit, held on August 30 in the Angolan capital, focuses on strengthening continental mechanisms for conflict prevention, management, and resolution. More than a dozen African heads of state are expected to attend. Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, previously called for strengthening conflict prevention in Africa by addressing root causes and placing the peace, security, and development nexus at the heart of continental action.

This position was presented during the 26th extraordinary session of the AU Executive Council, which is dedicated to conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms. The discussions center on reinforcing these mechanisms and reviewing and adopting a decision, action plan, and implementation matrix for conflict prevention and resolution in Africa. This extraordinary session aligns with a decision from the 39th ordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government in February 2026, which called for a summit in Luanda on strengthening and operationalizing the African Peace and Security Architecture APSA to create "a peaceful and secure Africa."

The session will conclude with the adoption of a decision, an action plan, and its implementation matrix.
