NASA launches Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to map the cosmos and study dark matter and energy
NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Sunday, August 30, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The observatory, developed over a decade at a cost exceeding 4 billion dollars, is named after American astronomer Nancy Grace Roman, known as the "mother of Hubble." It is designed to map vast portions of the cosmos, study the expansion of the Universe, and investigate dark matter and dark energy, while also searching for thousands of exoplanets. Roman will travel approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth to its observation point, a journey of about 100 days. Its wide field of view, over 100 times greater than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, will allow it to observe large areas of the sky, complementing the more powerful James Webb Space Telescope, which focuses on smaller regions. This synergy is expected to lead to the discovery of thousands of exoplanets and tens of thousands of supernovae.
