Widespread intestinal infection outbreak spreads to 15 US states, linked to contaminated lettuce

The Washington Post reported this, citing three sources close to the investigation. Missouri alone accounts for 1,095 cases and has seen a significant increase in the past week. Patients interviewed by local and state investigators reported consuming products from the fast-food chain Taco Bell before the onset of their symptoms, according to Lisa Cox, a spokesperson for Missouri's Department of Health.

Information on the other five newly added states was not immediately available. This geographical expansion marks a significant development in the epidemic. Michigan health authorities announced two deaths officially associated with the outbreak, caused by cyclospora, a microscopic parasite.

The two victims had pre-existing health conditions that may have been exacerbated by the infection and dehydration. The six new states join Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The CDC conducts epidemiological investigations during foodborne outbreaks to identify the source of contamination, relying on in-depth interviews with sick individuals to determine consumed foods, locations, and times.

Experts note that new cases do not necessarily indicate ongoing risk, and the actual number of affected individuals is likely higher than officially reported due to the long
