
UNFPA and Canada strengthen health facilities in Burkina Faso with equipment donation
The United Nations Population Fund UNFPA and Canada have donated three ambulances, 200 hospital beds, 115 delivery tables, other medical-technical equipment, office furniture, and medicines to health facilities in Burkina Faso. This donation aims to enhance the resilience of health structures in their mission to promote the health and protection of women and girls. Yves Sassenrath, UNFPA Resident Representative in Burkina Faso, stated that this support will contribute to the reopening and operation of health facilities and facilitate medical evacuations for the population. This initiative is part of a five-year project, from 2024 to 2028, funded by Canada, titled "Strengthening Access to Reproductive Health Services, Civil Status, and Social Cohesion in Burkina Faso." Sassenrath also noted that UNFPA's annual contribution to health activities for 2026, excluding these acquisitions, is estimated at 2.481 billion CFA francs, or 4.4 million US dollars. Tina Guthrie, Canada's Ambassador to Burkina Faso, highlighted that the donation is a result of the strong collaboration between the two countries. The Minister of Health, Lucien Kargougou, praised the support, calling it a "fruitful and effective" cooperation focused on the country's needs. He urged other partners to follow this example and align their actions with the priorities of the Burkinabe authorities.
