SDP presidential candidate Adebayo calls for President Tinubu's resignation over EFCC interference in Osun accounts
Prince Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, stated on Thursday that President Bola Tinubu, not Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Chairman Ola Olukoyede, should resign. Adebayo's comments came amid controversy surrounding the freezing of the Osun State Government's accounts by the EFCC, an action President Tinubu later directed to be lifted. Adebayo defended Olukoyede, asserting that the EFCC chairman was performing his statutory duties and accused the President of interfering with the commission's operations. He made these remarks during a press briefing at the SDP national secretariat in Abuja. Adebayo argued that if the EFCC acted improperly, legal remedies should be pursued through the courts rather than political intervention. He further alleged that Tinubu's intervention constituted interference with an independent institution, stating that a constitutional crisis arises when the President directs a lawful body on how to investigate. Adebayo maintained that the EFCC chairman acted within his legal powers, which are subject to judicial supervision. His stance contrasts with other critics, including former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission Chidi Odinkalu, who called for Olukoyede's resignation after Tinubu publicly directed the anti-graft agency to reverse its decision.
