US President Trump signs order targeting birth tourism
US President Donald Trump signed an order on Thursday aimed at curbing birthright citizenship, specifically targeting individuals he stated enter the country under the guise of tourism with the intention of giving birth. Trump commented that birthright citizenship has been made a "joke." This action follows a late June US Supreme Court ruling that struck down a previous attempt to restrict this constitutionally granted right, which Trump described as "very unfortunate." Stephen Miller, a close advisor to Trump, indicated that the order also seeks to deny birthright citizenship to children of members of "foreign terrorist organisations" and "large categories of people who lobby and act on behalf of foreign governments." Miller stated this move "ensures that large numbers of people who wrongly would be getting birthright citizenship will no longer be eligible for those benefits." Last year, the president signed another executive order decreeing that children born to parents in the United States illegally or on temporary visas would not automatically become US citizens. Lower courts blocked that previous move, ruling that the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution grants nearly everyone born on US soil American citizenship.
