Radiotherapy equipment halted due to power outages, warns Ghazi Jerbi
Ghazi Jerbi, an associate professor in oncological surgery and president of the Nourane Association for Cancer Prevention, issued a warning on August 28, 2026, via a Facebook post, regarding the impact of electricity cuts on cancer treatment equipment. He stated that the cooling pumps for two linear accelerators, essential for radiotherapy treatments, have been non-functional since August 27, 2026, due to a lack of air conditioning. These machines are used daily for cancer patients and require specific technical conditions to operate. Their shutdown could disrupt scheduled radiotherapy sessions. Jerbi emphasized that radiotherapy treatments follow a precise schedule and require continuous administration. He expressed concern that cancer patients might face delays while medical teams and equipment await the restoration of normal operating conditions. Critically, Jerbi noted the regularity of the power cuts, stating, "Load shedding works perfectly. On time, every day," highlighting a situation he deems incompatible with the need for continuous care. Through his post, Ghazi Jerbi urged consideration for the specific needs of healthcare facilities, especially those treating patients with serious illnesses.
