UNSMIL facilitates agreement on Libya's electoral framework and national elections roadmap
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya UNSMIL announced the signing of an agreement by the Smaller Convening, aimed at progressing Libya's political process and paving the way for national elections. This agreement addresses key aspects of UNSMIL's political roadmap, including the reconstitution of the High National Elections Commission HNEC Board of Commissioners and resolving outstanding issues within the constitutional and legal framework for presidential and legislative elections. The agreement outlines adjustments to the electoral framework, enabling presidential and legislative elections under a single executive authority, and commits parties to hold elections within 24 months. It also establishes a one-month timeframe for national endorsement by the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, alongside a follow-up mechanism to ensure implementation.
