North West ANC infighting intensifies over local election candidate selection
Infighting within the North West ANC has escalated ahead of local government elections, with a viral video showing ANC deputy provincial secretary Viola Motsumi, who is also North West MEC for education, verbally attacking provincial secretary Louis Diremelo. Motsumi accuses Diremelo of working against the provincial executive committee PEC and seeking its dissolution. This follows Diremelo's order for a re-run of the local council candidates' nomination process in the Ruth Segomotsi Mompati RSM region due to allegations of unconstitutionally convened branch meetings and candidate list rigging. The RSM ANC regional conference election was previously nullified by Luthuli House in May over similar concerns. Motsumi reportedly suspects Diremelo of consistently acting against PEC wishes, while Diremelo's actions were prompted by complaints from ANC branches and communities regarding the exclusion of qualified members and the inclusion of connected individuals. Similar allegations of manipulation and sidelining youth in candidate nominations have been made by the Bojanala regional ANC Youth League and ANC branches in the Moses Kotane subregion, with a formal complaint lodged against acting Bojanala regional secretary Thapelo Thoboke for alleged abuse of office.
