Sport minister Gayton McKenzie faces scrutiny over R31 million World Cup expenditure

Committee members expressed dissatisfaction with his presentation, stating that detailed expenditure reports were not provided and were still being finalized. DA committee member Leah Potgieter accused the minister of leaving early and vowed to use parliamentary processes to compel his return, calling his actions "blatant absconding" and an act of defiance. McKenzie had previously confirmed R30.9 million was spent, including R7.8 million for 14 officials' travel, R6.7 million for a legends' match, R3.6 million for hospitality suites, R3 million for 294 match tickets, and R10 million for fan engagement activities.

He also issued a statement criticizing sports federations, arguing that many misunderstand sports funding allocation and that federations should generate their own revenue, rather than relying solely on government budgets.
