BCEAO warns against fake banknotes and misinformation in UMOA region
The Central Bank of West African States BCEAO has issued a warning regarding the circulation of false information on social media concerning counterfeit banknotes within the West African Monetary Union UMOA area. The BCEAO stated that these social media posts expose an identification method based on inappropriate verification elements. The bank emphasized that using unvalidated authentication methods can lead to confusion, potentially resulting in the acceptance of counterfeits or the unjustified refusal of authentic banknotes. The BCEAO urged the public to be vigilant and to rely exclusively on its official website, specifically the "Banknotes and Coins" section, for reliable information. Furthermore, the BCEAO announced that it reserves the right to pursue legal action against individuals responsible for disseminating communications that undermine confidence in the currency it issues. This warning comes after the inauguration of the BCEAO Auxiliary Agency in Odienn茅 on May 5, 2025, presided over by the Vice President of the Republic, Ti茅moko Meyliet Kon茅.
