Spain implements border checks on Italy in response to migrant dispute

This action follows an unprecedented influx of migrants into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta. Spain's government stated that the heightened controls are a response to "persistent irregular migration pressure" facing Italy, intensifying a disagreement between the two EU partners and NATO allies. Spain's left-wing government criticized Italy's hard-right government for unfairly imposing a month of border checks on travelers from Spain on July 31, which suspended the EU's Schengen Area visa-free travel arrangements, due to the Ceuta influx.

Over 70,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta on July 30 and 31, with most returning to Morocco within 48 hours. The Spanish interior ministry indicated that the new checks on travelers from Italy would remain in effect until September 7.
