Nigerian law professor Akasoba Duke-Abiola accepts UN Secretary-General nomination
Nigerian law professor and diplomat Akasoba Duke-Abiola has accepted her nomination by the African Policy and Research Consortium for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. Duke-Abiola, widow of Chief Moshood Abiola, announced her acceptance in a statement, describing the nomination as a call to service, particularly for vulnerable communities, women, and children. The African Policy and Research Consortium, comprising government officials, scholars, policy leaders, and development practitioners, endorsed her amid calls for greater African representation in international institutions. Duke-Abiola highlighted her doctorate in sustainable development, focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as strengthening her commitment to peace and justice. She noted the significance of the broad support for her candidacy, spanning several African countries and other regions. She also emphasized the nomination's broader meaning for African women and girls facing poverty, insecurity, and limited education, stating it sends a message that African women can lead globally. Duke-Abiola has begun consultations with family, elders, statesmen and women, professional colleagues, and diplomatic partners, describing the UN Secretary-General office as a "sacred trust on behalf of humanity" and stressing the need for decisions guided by conscience, national interest, and global peace. She also encouraged women and children to pursue education and aspire to leadership.
