Rosgeologia begins search for underground water in Libya's Sahara Desert
Russia's state geological company Rosgeologia is conducting an exploration for untapped underground water reserves in Libya's Sahara Desert. This initiative aims to enhance Libya's water infrastructure, as the country currently relies on non-renewable fossil water pumped from deep aquifers for over 70% of its population. Russian Natural Resources Minister Aleksandr Kozlov confirmed the project, stating that Rosgeologia is employing advanced geological mapping and exploration techniques to locate deep aquifers. This exploration is considered a potential alternative or supplement to stabilize Libya's water infrastructure, especially given that Libya is a water-stressed nation with no permanent natural rivers. The project aligns with Libya's recent commitment to the Tripoli Declaration, alongside Algeria and Tunisia, for the management of the North-Western Sahara Aquifer System.
