SERAP and NGE threaten legal action over proposed Foreign Aids Bill

They describe the proposed legislation as a threat to civic space, media freedom, and democratic participation. In a joint open letter dated August 29, signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, and NGE General Secretary, Mr Onuoha Ukeh, the organizations urged the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to reject and withdraw the Bill. They argue that the Bill, sponsored by Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, is unnecessary, unlawful, and unconstitutional, and would establish extensive governmental control over civil society organizations, independent media, religious organizations, and other entities receiving foreign assistance.

The Bill proposes mandatory registration, disclosure requirements, and sanctions, including a minimum fine of N20 million for organizations and potential suspension or revocation of operating licenses.
