Federal Government highlights importance of early cancer detection for treatment success

Dr. Uchechukwu Nwokwu, National Coordinator for the National Cancer Control Plan at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, explained that cancer is a group of diseases affecting various organs, with its progression categorized into four stages. Stage One indicates the cancer is confined to its origin, while Stage Two means it has moved beyond the original area but remains within the affected organ. Stage Three signifies growth beyond the affected organ but still within the same body system or region.

Stage Four, the most advanced, occurs when cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, a process known as metastasis. Early detection significantly impacts treatment, with some Stage One cancers potentially curable through surgery alone. Stages Two and Three may require combined treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.

Stage Four cancer is more complex to manage due to its spread. Dr. Nwokwu stressed that treatment should be individualized and urged Nigerians to seek prompt medical attention for unusual symptoms and follow screening recommendations for early diagnosis.
