Barth茅l茅my Dias supports dissolution of National Assembly, urges local elections
Barth茅l茅my Dias, former mayor of Dakar, has publicly supported the dissolution of the National Assembly, describing the current situation in the chamber as a "circus." His stance aligns with the position advocated by supporters of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, including Ousmane Sonko, who also expressed a desire for the Assembly's dissolution and a new electoral victory. Dias's call for new legislative elections is seen as adding significant political weight to the demand, as it comes from an actor outside the direct political rivalry. Additionally, Dias urged President Faye to ensure that upcoming local elections are held without delay, emphasizing their importance within the republican calendar. He believes this would position the presidency as an arbiter of the institutional calendar rather than a party to the parliamentary crisis. This intervention by Dias comes amidst growing institutional tensions, with other figures like Alioune Tine, founder of Afrikajom Center, previously warning of parliamentary "guerrilla warfare" and calling for peaceful citizen mobilization.
